LED Lighting

Our customers repeatedly tell us how important the following features are in tipping the scales in favor of an Enova LED surgical headlight.


Superior Illumination: We pride ourselves in creating the brightest LED surgical headlights available in the market.   In fact, the XLT-225A is the world’s brightest LED surgical headlight providing  225,000 lux with a cool, homogenous light. color temperature of all Enova headlights is 6100° Kelvin. By providing consistently bright light and no light degradation Enova LED surgical headlights decrease eye fatigue.

Longest Battery Life: No other LED surgical headlight provides battery power that lasts as long as Enova’s PP4 and PP2 Battery Packs. Our batteries  last  5 – 10  hours at maximum intensity up to 10 – 24 hours at mimimum intensity.  and XLT-125, this four-cell battery will keep the LED illuminated for up to 8 hours at maximum intensity and 24 hours at minimum intensity.

Lightweight:   With our heaviest product (XLT-225A) coming in at only 11 oz, our products can be worn for long days without worry of neck fatigue.

Durable and Rugged :  Our lamps are constructed of aluminum instead of plastic and the headband is constructed of sturdy plastic and double-padded neoprene comfort pads. Enova’s headlights can take years of use and abuse without giving up.  Trusted by the US Marines.

Other reasons that are brought up to us when customers talk about Enova headlights include untethered freedom, easy maintenance, low overall costs, the five-year warranty on the headlight, and our outstanding customer service.

LED stands for Light-emitting Diode, which is a solid-state semiconductor that releases electrical energy in the form of light. They do no break or burn out. The LEDs used in Enova  headlights last approximately 50,000 hours—that’s 25 years of illumination if the headlight is used 8 hours a day. The light emitted from Enova LEDs is pure white, bright, cool light and the system is digital–it is either 100% on or off. Halogen and xenon degrade in luminosity over time due to bulb degradation and fiber optic cable breakage. Also, fiber optic xenon and halogen systems emit infrared heat.

No, LED illumination will not degrade with time. Light quality and intensity will remain constant without any degradation. The light emitted from Enova LEDs is pure white, bright, cool light and the system is digital.

Compared to purchasing a 300-watt xenon fiber optic system and factoring in the approximately $1,000 annual costs for bulb and cable replacement costs, LED surgical headlights saving can be conservatively estimated at approximately $3,000 to $5,000 in the first year.

Brightness can be measured in, Lux, Lumens or  Foot Candles..

At Enova, we use Lux as our unit of measurement for all of our headlights as Lux provides a truer measure of brightness for surgeons than Lumens or Foot Candles.

Lux measures brightness at a specific point at a specific distance, telling you how bright your surface of work will actually be. Whereas Lumens and Foot Candles are primarily used in consumer and industrial lighting and measure brightness as a matter of volume (i.e. the amount of light in a cubic meter).  All consumer light bulbs  are measured in lumens.

More scientifically, one lux is equivalent to one lumen per square meter.  Foot candle is an antiquated  unit of measurement of brightness in which one foot candle is equivalent to one lumen per square foot.


Yes. Light intensity is adjustable from full intensity (100%) to reduced intensity (30%)

Some Enova headlights have adjustable aperature, and some do not.  All models ending in A (e.g. XLT-125A, PLT-ENT-30A) have adjustable aperture, while models ending in F (e.g. XLT-105F) have fixed aperture.

Brightness and spot-size (aperture adjustments) are measured at a distance of 14 inces (about 35cm).

Our XLT-225A has a field of illumination ranging from 2″ to 5″ (5 to 13 cm), producing 225,000 lux at the smallest aperture.
Our XLT-125A has a field of illumination ranging from 2″ to 6″ (5 to 15.5 cm), producing 125,000 lux at the smallest aperture

Enova now offers two lines of surgical headlights.

Our XLT Series has a color temperature of 6100 degrees Kelvin – pure white illumination (comparable to daylight on a cloudy day) that provides true tissue color rendition.

Our PLT series has a color temperature of 4500 degrees Kelvin – offering incredible color rendition and tissue distinction.

The old Enova Iris models, and the XLT-125A and PLT-90A feature “reverse-mounted reflective” technology where maximum brightness is achieved by mounting the LED chip on the lens “cross-hair” facing backwards, so its light is reflected and columnated forward. You are seeing the reflection of the square LED chip. Most surgeons find the shape of illumination is not obvious in the uneven topography of the surgical field.

New Enova headlight models are designed by our optical engineers to meet our highest standards of optical ART  (Advanced Refractive Technology), which provides a round spot of illumination. All Enova headlights optimize ART to capture every photon to maximize brightness and clarity in the surgical field.  Our commitment to ART is what makes Enova the brightest surgical headlights in the world.

Yes.  All of our headlights are designed to  be used with loupes mounted on eye-glass frames and support magnifications up to 4.5 times.  Our newly designed brackets with three adjusting links allow for perfect coaxial alignment to ensure you’re your illumination and magnification are on the same plan as your vision.

Surgical headlights should be wiped down with 70% isopropyl alcohol or similar disinfectant after each use.

No. The metal housing used on Enova headlights is a heat sink designed to remove heat from the LEDs for greater light output. After several minutes of use, the metal housing will be warm (up to 120º F; 48º C) but not hot enough to cause injury.

Yes. Enova Comfort Pads are attached with Velcro and are replaceable. It is recommended that they be replaced every three to six months.

Enova surgical headlights are manufactured, fully tested, and inspected in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States.

Enova provides a five-year warranty on LED chip and lamp assembly, a one-year warranty on the battery packs and accessories.

No.  The XLT-225A and PLT-165A use a Gray Twist Cable, while most of our other headlights use a Black Twist Cable.  Some models, however, use other cables.  With a purchase of your headlight, the correct cable will be sent. If you have questions about purchasing new or extra cable, speak to an Enova representative to confirm which cable you need.

PLT stands for Pure Light Technology, and XLT stands for Extreme Light Technology. The PLT series offers a warm,  Color-rendering Index of 90 (CRI 90), which allows for greater color rendition The XLT series, while operating at a lower CRI, offers brighter cooler light, with higher LUX.  If you are curious which models best suit your practice or surgery needs please contact us.

Our Halo Series was discontinued in 2008.  Our Iris  Series were discontinued in 2012.

If you own a Halo or Iris  headlightand need service, please contact us. We will do our best to support and repair these “retired” units but unfortunately, due to advances in LED and lithium-ion technologies many components for the Halo and IRIS  series are no longer available.  .

All of these models are now out of warranty, and it may be a good time to trade-in your older units  for newer Enova models.  The advances that we have made with our new XLT and PLT Series will astound you!


Power Packs, Battery Packs and Charger

Enova’s digital battery packs use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Battery life on a single charge varies depending on the battery pack used with each specific Enova surgical headlight.

PP2 Battery Life

5-10 hours with XLT-125A and lower-lux models

Not for use with XLT-225A and PLT-165A

PP4 Battery Life

9-24 hours with XLT-125A and lower-lux models

5-10 hours with XLT-225A and PLT-165A

Freestyle Battery Life

4-8 hours – compatible with XLT-125A, PLT-100A, and ENT models

Charge time for Enova digital battery packs is approximately three hours. We recommend that batteries not be left on the charger for weeks or months at a time. Left on a charger over night, over the weekend, or up to a week is fine, but not longer.

The Freestyle batteries are designed for use on the headband itself. These batteries do not require a cable, as they connect directly to the headlight.  This allows for greater freedom of movement.  Freestyle batteries are not compatible with older Enova models, as they require our new style of headband.

The Freestyle batteries must be charged with the Freestyle Base Station.  This charger, however, uses the same power cord as the Power Pack two bay charger.

We recommend that the battery pack be charged nightly, similar in frequency to a cell phone.

Enova battery packs are guaranteed for one year, but designed to last much longer. Typically they are replaced after three – five years of use.

100 to 250 volts. The charger contains a universal transformer that adjusts current automatically.

The cord included with the Enova battery charger is a North American three-prong hospital grade cord. Euro, UK or Australian cords can be substituted.


Yes.  Our headlights are designed to work with any loupes.

Our loupes are optimized for special ergonomic comfort, which pairs perfectly with the coaxial alignment of Enova’s headlights.  We recommend  using Enova loupes with Enova headlights for maximum comfort and durability.

Enova’s loupes are not only our newest product, but they are also our most diverse.  With custom-fit lenses, magnification, and frames, there are over 700 options for your loupes.  For this reason, we would like you to call us at 651-236-8857 to order.

Our loupes frames can be made from titanium or hard sport-plastic depending on your needs.

As for the lenses and magnifiers, they are made from high quality glass and aluminum, offereing crystal-clear field of vision, and dependable construction.
